The use of define.xml as a metadata repository

define.xml and ODM XML are almost identical as far as the value-level metadata are concerned. They both contain the exact, unique and unambiguous definition of clinical items, measurement units and question texts in different languages for the CRF. So if you use this metadata for your next trial, you can be sure all the CRF data is collected in a way that ensures transfer to SDTM datasets without the need for transformation or recoding.

CDISC ODM standard provides a professional and robust way of archiving clinical data, including the full audit trail and administrative information. This standard has the advantage of being system independent and both human and machine readable and has existed for over 10 years. With CDISC ODM standard, data can also be converted in pdf and a multitude of other data formats.
